I think there is something fundamentally British about feeding the birds. Maybe it’s my distant memories of watching Mary Poppins as a child, humming along to Julie Andrews singing ‘Feed the Birds’ or, it’s memories of my grandparents and their obsession with buying either bird seed or a new feeder every time we went […]Read more "Bird Food Recipe – Vegan Fat Balls"
It’s been a good while since I have written a blog post. 3 years to be exact… where has that time gone?! Maybe I’ve just been waiting to write about something worthwhile. Maybe, I’ve just been distracted by all the pretty pictures on Instagram. Either way, I’ve written something new and it’s surprising how productive […]Read more "What’s in your compost?"
We’ve been busy at the allotment and generally in life. Hence, the minimal blog posts lately. Since we started growing our own food and looking after the plot, it has become more and more apparent that we want to edge towards a no waste lifestyle. With this in mind, we have started to try and […]Read more "No Waste Vegan Green Pesto"
This time last year, we were growing potatoes in hessian recycled coffee sacks in the garden at home. Upon digging up our first earlies we found tiny (albeit tasty) potatoes and the yield was pretty non existent. They had been fed and watered and earthed up. They had finished with their beautiful little flowers… And […]Read more "Pulling Potatoes"
We had a wonderful day getting the first sowing of brassica into open ground a few weeks ago. They had been burning a hole in their pots, getting bigger and bigger. But the ground hadn’t been fully prepared. Once the soil was dug over, they were put into position and they looked pretty awesome and […]Read more "A Tale of Eaten Brassica"
The rust was prolific. I’m sure we could have left them to fend for themselves but it felt like a waste of life. Yesterday, we launched a rescue mission… I am so glad we did. We carefully lifted the concrete like ground with a fork and pulled the garlic trying not to touch the spoiled […]Read more "The Rust Chronicles – Part 2"
Today we made an unscheduled check on the plot to see how things were going. Also, it was a chance to remind ourselves of what the allotment looked liked. Once again, it has felt like ages since we have been able to spend any time there. Apart from a little bit of direct sowing of carrots, beetroot and radishes, everything else has been left to do it’s thing for a little bit whilst we catch up with work based joys.Read more "A Little Plot Update"
We thought we’d start a series of posts with breakfast recipes to set you up for a day on the allotment. Some of these you may even be able to cook at the plot (depending on your shed facilities). The recipes are quick and easy with oodles of flavour. The aim is to fill up […]Read more "Lemon and Coconut Porridge"
For the first time in a LONG time, we have time off work. Excited is an understatement. 4 days of doing things together which won’t get interrupted by randomly placed music lessons and emergency call outs to massage injured, aching muscles. You’d think that we would be relaxing spending quality time together… But, unfortunately for […]Read more "Good vibes on Good Friday"
Last week turned out to be one of those weeks. After scheduling hours in at the allotment for most of the week, we didn’t manage to get there once. Personally, I get really disheartened when this happens. You start to doubt whether you have enough time to manage. You see the plots around you slowly developing […]Read more "Sweet Peas and Potting On"
